Craft beer flows at this mostly vegetarian and very vegan friendly eatery on Southard Street. The prices are reasonable and the portions are over the top. If you want a normal sized meal for one, order soup or the burger. Otherwise bring an awl to add an extra hole to your belt. If you want a trough of food for three, order the udon (which is delicious and comes served seemingly by the gallon).
Unusually, they serve bean salad as a side to most sandwiches (it's good). There wasn't a single item I tried that I disliked, but my favourite was the eggplant meatball sandwich on the specials menu. Following that, the curry chicken sandwich. For a lighter meal, and by that I mean like a sack of bricks compared to a pickup truck, there are also salad options. The salad I ordered came with a good 300-400 grams of tofu.
The vegan key lime pie, made from 100% brilliance, ought to exist in my life at any given moment.
I am surprised we were allowed back for a second visit, especially given that my mom spent our first visit blowing spitballs on my dad’s face at a two foot range.
Go to The Cafe if:
- You're starving, like haven't eaten for a week kind of starving.
- Leftovers make your world go around. Because you will have plenty for dinner later.
- Your party is picky. The menu has something for everybody.
- Craft beer appeals, but being in a room full of people who drink craft beer doesn't. This place is not snobbish at all.
